Mary Jane Elgin

205 Myers Street

Mary Jane Elgin grew up in the foothills of Altadena California. She always loved the out of doors and all the wonders of the natural world around her. She found her happiness in being a maker and filled her free time with drawing, painting, calligraphy, and collage. Graduating with a studio art degree from Pomona College, she headed for Japan where she lived for two years, studying sumie painting and weaving. Upon returning to the Pasadena area she pursued her weaving practice and began more in-depth studies of figure drawing, botanical painting, and collage, taking classes at UCLA, Otis, Art Center, and the Pasadena Arboretum. In the early 1990’s she began her exploration into the world of ceramics and developed her techniques for carving and piercing her ceramics to create a new perspective for her botanical and landscape scenes. Not surprisingly, her style is distinctly Asian and reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts Movement which has always been her personal favorite. She has taught art and ceramic classes to children and adults for the last thirty years and now gives regular ceramic classes in her studio on Orcas.
